Look at this: A ridiculously beautiful nook off a country road in Napa, where people have trees hanging from swings, and fall colors extending out their back window. I had a great time seeing all the magical places and beautiful colors.
Decided to take this painting back with me. I forgot how much I liked it. Maybe it'll go into my portrait show.

Making progress! Finally painted with Mellissa some more, and worked on the portrait of Sean--- it's much better after this round. I'm becoming quite happy with it.

I love painting. You never know how it's going to turn out. Paint is so unpredictable, I think. That's why I love it.

Working on getting things ready for a boutique faire and an art walk. It'll be a BUSY week, but very worth it. Sometimes I'm baffled at how much I'm doing with my art now a days. I'm so thankful things are working out. Progress!!

Baby Steps

You have to take Baby Steps, but when you do, you get stronger, and more confident. That's how I feel. Each show I learn more, become more confident, grow technically, and I'm inspired! It just makes me ready to do another one as soon as I can. I loved getting ready for this show, and I love the people who put it together. I sold three pieces, and got a great response from everyone.

They loved the book marks.... :)
Thanks so EVERYONE who helped, came and supported, and to everyone I love and loves me back. You are the reason why I can make art with confidence- because you believe in me. :)

More of these little beauties! That's right! There's a show coming up October 14th at the Back Bay Center with Gallery 212, and I will be selling and displaying my "Quote- based" paintings with several interesting and admirable quotes like last time. I'm playing with shadow images, images I'm making by theoretically erasing paint and seeing what animal or face comes out of it. It's fun, for sure, and why not? There's so much to explore with the paint, I can't help but want to try it all.

Denver was a great time--- just got back a week ago. It felt likt time had stopped while I was over there, but when I got back, so much had happened!

I've taken myself away from my daily life in order to get a few things done.

1. Write some darned music.

2. Finish the dummy for this Children's book, already!

Here's some progress pictures. They are both rough color studies, but I can't believed I've never done studies before- they're going to make the finished work so much easier to map out.

I'm having fun here. Playing a lot of music and having the free time to go for bike rides, paint, watch a lot of TV which feels quite wrong but, hey... things that are scarce should be enjoyed and valued once in a while, even if they aren't the most productive of things.

But I realize life is what you make it. I know this fantasy of free time can't last, but I can make time for all the stuff I love, and it's definitely important to be able to do what you love, and not live to just pay your bills, or make the next purchase. Time time time. It's an illusion I know, but it's our functioning world.

Oh the labor and love of making a children's book. It's the coolest project I've ever attempted, yet it's so difficult to pull the time together to actually do it. When one starts a children's book, I think one should make it their new wife/husband. You must nurture it so that it can nurture you. You must pay it attention, give it time, give it love, understanding, but most of all--- time. This is the problem here people. But I've become aware now, so....

In other news, my album is going to the printers very soon. We're waiting on them to start asking for which files and what files. Release party? Yea! There will be one in Orange County, and one in Napa. It'll be a big "to-do" and art will be around, friends, fun, food. I can't wait to share it with everyone. It sounds nice, you know? It sounds real and nice. Real nice.

I've been laying around with this image for my band, "Orphan Annie". We're on facebook. Look us up, please. :) I want to go all out with this dooder, so I'm taking me time. Think psychedelic, think little orphan Annie, think eyeballs and faces and butterflies and sunbeams. Our music is that.

Working on the book, folks! It's going well. Here's a peak at the story boards, much of which are finished. Another sitting to go, then I'll start working on larger sketches, then paintings. So excited!

After working on a couple of books, other author's books, I've realized that it's important to still show your own work around to people, get some ideas, work off each other, because if you do not, you'll be your only critic, and the product will suffer. I had a dear friend come over to draw with me today, it I threw a few ideas at her, she gave me great advice, great suggestions, and I can already tell the story board is moving well!

In other news, still painting, playing music, etc. Going to Colorado to play some gigs and see some friends. Bought a rad new sketchbook that just makes me want to sketch every day in it. How awesome is that?

More Paintings

I haven't posted for a few weeks, but I HAVE been painting. It's in me now, and I can't stop! I've started more pieces for some future shows, and also a study for a children's book, as well as a painting for a friend (the Buddah). It's been fun seeing how different each painting turns out, and I will continue to just "let it happen". Sometimes it is more cartoony, sometimes more decorative, sometimes neither.

There's some great illustrator-ish events coming up. The O.C. Shmooze on August 13th, and the OC Kid's Book Fair October 2nd. I went to that event last year and had a blast. Great authors, illustrators, tons of books to buy and have signed by the authors. I'm just thankful I have these events accessible and close by. Until then, more painting, and more children's books. Love to all!

A study for a friend's story called, "Around the Block". He's signed a contract, so it'll be published and it's an absolutely lovely piece of work! I might not do the illustrations, but I love that I'll have this painting sketch with a little bit of his story to show around or just hang up in my room.
Painting for a dear friend. He's been a spiritual guide and pal so he deserves a little something. It's the least I can do!

Regular 10" x 10", like the rest. This is my favorite thrift store cat statue. A more decorative piece, but still includes a quote sure to inspire you each day.

Gallery 212: Success!

Hello, everyone. What a couple weeks it's been, getting ready for the show, finishing up my paintings. I really enjoyed doing this series, and there will be many more to come because.... look! The wall is bare! That's right, folks--- I sold every one of my paintings at the art show. I was so pleased and excited to see the response, so I'll be starting a bunch more, and continuing to show them at Gallery 212 and possibly some other venues in Orange county. There are so many more amazing quotes out there, I can't wait to start!

New Paintings, what?

Yes, I've done it! I've started painting again ---with a new vigor, too! I have an art show July 8th in Costa Mesa (Back Bay Center & the Offices at Back Bay 2675 Irvine Ave.) I hope to do more of these shows, since I feel like I have something to say in my art for the first time in a long time. I know things like these go in waves; sometimes my song writing is just nonexistent, but what matters is I share it when it IS there.

I'm going to show about 6 pieces, all for sale, all affordable, all just fun. I hope you enjoy. Here's a look at two of the pieces. They're 10" x 10".

On a quick note, I will perform at this little art show. I'm so excited to combine my music and art. I've also been hesitant to do so, afraid people might not separate me from other artists, or not take me seriously, but I've been getting a great response, and I've always been torn by the two arts, why shouldn't they be combined? They're both art after all? So here goes to a new outlook! Pursue, pursue!

A Festival to Remember...

What a day! A warm 75 degrees, fresh cut grass, and the smell of barbeque. Besides those bright and beautiful conditions, there were tables upon tables of art and crafts, and lots of great musicians. I had such a great time, that when I left, I was surprised six hours had flown by!

I sat at a table a drew portraits all day. Half of them were of people's dogs from a photo on their i-phones. I actually had a great time doing that, and a few of the kids I drew were just fun to talk to, besides being so much fun to draw. I'll be looking to do more events like this soon. Laguna, LA, Orange--- here I come!

Here's some work that I've been meaning to put up:

The first is a Disney sketch practice. I use to draw mermaids and princesses all the time when I was a kid, and I still have the worst time drawing Disney! It's so iconic, so recognizable.

The second is a little painting I've had penciled, sitting on my desk for the longest time. It's fun, whimsical. I should have taken more time--- but I will do that the next chance I have to work on another ditty.

A Special Place...

Remember all those line drawings I did of wildflowers, birds, and such? Well, the drawings have been etched into a beautiful black marble, and reside in the Martha Walker Garden at Skyline Park in Napa, CA. There are 10 -11 signs, and they all turned out just beautifully. Thank you Kathleen for putting the time to make the Martha Walker Garden so lovely and special. I grew up playing in that garden when my Dad had flower shows and sales next to it in the hall. I love that place, and I'm so thankful I contributed something of worth there.

In other news. I'm starting a venture in portraiture. I'm going to draw some people I know and kids I know, and go from there. Artwork to be posted soon!

Hello Friends!

Been busy. Working at a preschool and still doing some art, but mostly hanging out with 2-5 years olds all day. I've been getting some great ideas, though! And I'm happy to say I have a few new book ideas that I'm excited to work on in the coming months.

I started painting again. I'm out of canvases, but here's one of the little decorative, folk-art style piece I did for my room.

It sits on the wall by my skull and books, and my tiny owl, who watches over me at night. It's exactly what I wanted: colorful, abstract, and fun. I modeled it very closely of another artists paintings. She does work so similarly, but I just wanted something for my room, and for my own painting/meditative practices.

As I painted, I laughed because one of the paint dollops looked like a little butt. I took a picture so you could see. It was orange too! Oh little bottom, you blessed my painting with your presence that day. I will sorely miss you!

Plenty of Paper

Eisley is my favorite band and has been for at least five years, so it's about time I do an illustration based on their lovely and whimsical lyrics. This piece is titled, "Plenty of Paper" from their album, "Room Noises". It's their first LP and it's fabulous. Their third album is dropping in March--- it was streaming for free online this week, and I must say it. is. going. to. be. awesome. Go Eisley!

I'm thinking there will be more of these to come, whether they are based off Eisley songs or not. I'm thinking a series of three. If anyone has ideas for the next song I should illustrate, let me know!

The Martha Walker Native Habitat Garden

Hello friends,

Just finished a lovely project for the California Native Plant Society. I had to draw illustrations of flowers and small animals, many of which you have seen on this blog. I've always loved the Martha Walker Garden, so I'm happy to have been a part of its beautification. You can read about this sweet native habitat garden here. And when the signs are finished in a couple months, feel free to walk the garden after you attend one of CNPS's native plant sales. I used to go to those all the time with my Dad, and I have such great memories of them.

Friends, family, lovely newcomers--- I introduce to you--- my new style. I've been trying to find a finished product that I enjoy doing, and is interesting, different, fun, and easy to stay consistent with. I've been doing so much pen and ink that I wanted to incorporate that, and here's what I came up with. I'll still be doing many other techniques, but this one will be my "brand". So next stop is my website, where I'll be updating and changing the look of it to match my brand. Love to all of you!

Ahhhh, life drawing! Dr. Sketchy's in Anaheim was welllll worth the $15. The host was hilarious and very charismatic, the model was beautiful and all dolled up, and there were a lot of artists there (always a good sign!!) I'll be going back again. The drawing above was the best one from the night. It took a while to loosen up but I'm pleased enough with how this piece came out.

Poor Hummingbird

Anthony and I found a little hummingbird, who had accidentally flown into our apartment, and was desperately trying to get out via the window pane. Poor thing, he was only five feet from the open door in which he had flown, but he still fhummed up and down the window, unable to get out. So Hummingbird Rescuer-man came to the... rescue:

Karate Kids

Here's the scoop. The book is finished! I've concluded my part in a great children's book about Karate and what Karate is all about. The book is called, "Quiet Voice, Loud Voice". In part, it talks about the basics of Karate, and it also talks about a young boy's experience with some bullies, and how he uses the values of Karate to solve his problem.

Here's a spread from the book. When it's available, I will let everyone know, and there will be a book release party to celebrate!

I went to an awesome art gallery yesterday. The Rothick Art Haus is on 170 S. Harbor Blvd. in Anaheim. They have a show up about..... yes you guessed it.... Unicorns! I saw a fabulous photo in the O.C. Weekly of a punked out girl with a hummingbird strapped to her forhead. She had tattoos and pink hair, and she was fabulously painted. I loved it so much that I HAD to go see the show in Anaheim. I purchased an awesome sweatshirt there with a "Mustachicorn" on the front. You can see a picture of me wearing it here:

Tis The Season to Be Busy!

I've been doing so many odd jobs, I don't know what to do with myself! The best one, though, and has been every year, is singing Christmas Carols. I get to wear a lovely scarlet bonnet, and lipstick, and a fluffy skirt, as I sing to little elves. Over the past month I've also been doing a lot of little drawings of wildflowers for some native plant signs in the Martha Walker garden. The artwork will actually be etched into a black marble like stone--- so I'm very excited to see how these turn out! Here are a couple drawings I did:

Art Walk

I went to the Art Walk in Lemert Park, Los Angeles. I had a great time. Listened to the drum circle, and painted the drum circle on some bristol paper with tempra paint. This woman had set up aisles and paints for anyone who wanted to create some art, so I joined in!

All Stones

I'm in a CD exchange group, where one person makes a mixed CD for about 12 other people each month, and mails them out. I've gotten two so far, and it's introduced me to so much new music. Best part is, I know some of them, and most others, I don't know, so it's fun to receive a CD of someone's favorite music, that I've never met. Kind of like reading a story. I can imagine how the person looks and speaks based on the music they've given me.

So my CD is based on stone. I was inspired by a few songs, and ended up finding a lot more that relate to stone and the grave mood that follows it. I think of celtic stories, anger, waiting, loneliness. It should be a nice mix for the moody weather coming up, and I'm hoping it has an element of magic that will make people close their eyes when they listen--- become completely absorbed in the story of each song.

The artwork above is the ink line for the album art. I decided to have fun with it and make a little treasure of a CD. I'll post the finished artwork when it's ready. Cheers!

Progress, my dears!

Wheeze book getting closer, everybody! I've been working on the page layouts with the author, placing everything, adjusting images, and it's finally coming together. The spread above is a sketch of the last two page spread in the book. I can't wait for you all to se the finished product.

I have been working away on the new book. Since it's my second go, I've made smarter choices, and I'm labeling my pages, and drawing them on complete, full pages of paper. No more line down the middle. No more confusion of what text goes with what image. This time it's smooth sailing (for the most part), and a lot of fun!

Ricky (the author) and I are still working out how we are going to get the book out there. Do we go with this company, or the other company. I think, because we're so torn, we might just go with both. It's our first time, and we just want to get the book out there so people can read it. There are so many companies that can help you edit and print; Flutterfrogpublishing.com ...... lulu.com ....... even googling "self publish your children's book" will turn up ideas. I'm so excited that I'm going to stop here and talk about all this another time. Maybe once I have the jewel in my hands, I'll finally feel relieved. I just want this book done, y'all!

A Day at the FAIR!

Went to the O.C Kids book fair this past Sunday. Anyone who loves books- loves to buy books, hear people read from books, or just be around books--- should go to this fair....next year.

I bought a few new reads myself. Two YA novels (I can't help it! I love the fantasy and Sci Fi!!!) and I will be enjoying them with a cup of tea and this nice cool weather we've been having. Very moody.

The first one I bought was "Inside Out" by Maria V. Snyder.

It's new newest novel, and looks pretty cool. Think City of Ember, contained, Fallout. I'm

excited to see what the world is like.

The next book with be a guilty pleasure:

Lauren Kate's "Fallen" sounded good because there were so many fans there to hear her read,

and what she read was entertaining. Even the book sellers at the booths recommended it.

In other news, we're still working on the Wheeze story and trying to get it together to send to publishing. It is a labor of love, but it'll come together soon. We're looking at alibris.com, lulu.com, and another indi publishing place to help get the book out there. There are so many opportunities to get the work to the public, you would be surprised. I'm starting to believe that if you want to make a book, make a book. Don't think that someone has to ask you to or pay you to. just do it and use all the free tools to send it out into the world. There are no boundaries!

WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT HOW TO MAKE A CHILDREN'S BOOK!

First and foremost, What I learned about making and publishing a children's book is that I wish someone would have put out instructions, because I felt blind going through all of this! Therefore, I am sharing my personal experience--- trials and errors, and tips to help anyone who needs words of encouragement.

I'll be writing in segments. And tonight I will start with the beginning (oh how fitting, you say!). I will, in fact, talk about the beginning stages--- storyboards, sketches, meetings, and how to avoid doing things over and over till you start to cry.

It all starts with words.

I do believe a book will actually start developing very well as long as it has an edited manuscript with the kinks already worked out, and as much accuracy as possible to its final counterpart.

Next, Story board!

It wasn't complicated and it shouldn't be for you. The storyboard is the easiest, most enjoyable part of the process! Just be free and loose, don't impress anybody with your drawings--- especially yourself--- and be ready to do a couple different boards. Revise and talk about your storyboard with someone to make sure your ideas are showing up on paper clearly.

Yada Yada Yada, right? Right. I'm guessing this is all pretty simple. So I'll just give a few tips to illustrators that I ran into. These issues made my life difficult toward the end of the project, so it's best to avoid them in the first place.

- Decide what your medium is and make sure you can paint, draw, whatever, on the flattest surface possible! I used watercolor, and forgot that paper warps. Tape your water color to a board, and keep the originals flat for photographing.

- Decide on the dimensions of artwork that you will need to abide by. If you are illustrating a 9 x 7 book, you do NOT want to paint your illustrations on 30 x 32. Make sure you either know you'll be cropping your image, or make the proportions similar.

- number your originals on the back with what page number or text each goes with. This will rid you of some confusion in the future.

Hey all! I've still been tucking away at my magic card illustrations. Just worked on a few new ones and there's ONE more on the way! I'll be putting together a little "art of" book for class, and printing the cards out at their original size at the end of class. I'll look forward to having the cards to hand out to family as souvenirs.

I've been working on some prop tests and storyboards from the new show Adventure Time, and I'm really enjoying the style. these sketches below are just rough ideas for character designs and prop designs, and other assorted doodles that came out after drawing all day. They're just fun, and I hope you all tune into Cartoon network to watch the show on April 5th at 8pm. Monday Monday, ooooh ahhhh!! Who sang that? The Mamas and the Papas? Regardless, I'm so very glad it's Monday. After a long weekend and an ever longer, tiresome month, the holiday is approaching I am going home! I'll be so glad to take some real time to devote my self to some artwork. I'm allowing myself to procrastinate and watch television when I have some free time at the apartment because I have been driving around Orange county singing so much, that my creative energy is quite used up by the end of the day.

When I get back, though, I'm going to be setting some deadlines and getting my dummy book together to send out to publishers. It's about time I start getting it all done, eh?

Well, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Watch out for strange calls from Santa Clause (I got one) where he'll let you know how good you've been all year (that's a lie), and how you better go to bed early on Christmas Eve. No joke. I got a call just like this early today. Gave me the chills.........

This is a small project I'm doing for a friend, Diane. She has written many poems and a few children's books. This painting is for a poem called, "Colors of Me". It'll be done by the next go--- it needs a couple more hours. It's supposed to look very whimsical. I'l be adding a lot of highlights on the wings and eyes, and some kites in the background. I'll be putting up the finished digi-paint when it's done.

I've never done this before, even though I've lived here all my life. I went out, today, with the sister, and painted on the side of the road. There was a sweet little winery nestled between some trees, and another up on a proud hill. We painted for an hour and this is what I ended up with. Tons of fun--- will do it again!

Here's an ink drawing for a mini-book I'm doing in class. I've found my love for ink and bronze nibs. I'll be hand-crafting the book, too. Although I've drawn and re-drawn these scenes many times, the ink pulls it all together, and I'm very pleased with the final product.

I've been working on a mural in my room! It's very simple, but it'll most likely grow over time. I also painted my head board... again. I used to paint furniture all the time, and I've found I really miss it. Up next: a trip to Goodwill for some neat-o night-stands or small tables that I can paint. We'll see.

I've been playing around with this idea for a painting, which I started working through at the end of last semester. The only difference between this concept and the origional was the birds were actually flying acrobatic figures. I think I'll go for the circus folk for the origional painting. The digital painting has it's own, ghostly quality that I like. I'll put the painting up when it's finished and we can compare.

David suggested I draw a "shark monster". I find sharks, monstrous enough, but if I had to add anything to them to make them even more of a threat, I would add long, tongue-like tendrils that surge out of their throats and pierce you in the jugular and drag you down toward their open mouths so they may devour you. The day sharks evolve to have any sort of appendages in the day I will never go further than 3 feet deep into the ocean.

ART RAGE?!

So. This is an experiment. I just downloaded the free program, "Art Rage" after hearing a friend talk about it, and I have to say, there are some pros but mostly cons. First of all, it doesn't draw well: the cursor is complicated as it changes from tool to tool, and though I didn't use a wacom tablet for this doodle, I can tell by the way the "medium" drags that it's awkward. The end result has a nice look to it, as far as the paint consistency and marker opacity. Still, I think I would much rather paint digitally in Photoshop....
